Nerja, a place still exists on the Costa Del Sol which lies between small coves untouched by development and surrounded by an impressive mountain scenery. At the easterly end of the province, only 50kms, from Málaga and within 1 hour drive of Granada, you will find Nerja, the touristic capital of the Axarquia.
With its mild climate, you can enjoy yourself to the full all year round and take advantages of the relaxed way of life of a village that still retains much of the character of its Moorish past. Today, Nerja offers an excellent range of quality accommodation and leisure time facilities. There are thirteen kms of beaches including the internationally famous Burriana beach that has once again been awarded the Blue Flag of the European Union and the small coves below the impressive cliffs of Maro, which have been the inspiration of numerous artists who have set up residence here.
Lovers of nature can enjoy the wonderful countryside in the area, camping at the campsite or in the camping zone in the parkland. For those who seek alternative activities on their holiday there is fishing, diving, waterskiing, canoeing, waterbikes, hiking, cycling and horseriding, jeep safaris, paragliding and much more.
The history begins with the Balcon de Europa ( Balcony of Europe ) this was constructed around 1487 the former 9th Century Castle is now a viewing point above the sea. To the side of the Balcon you will find the 17th Century El Salvador Church constructed in baroquemudejar style. You may also visit the 16th Century Nuestra Señora de las Augustias Hermitage with its paintings by the master Alonso Cano.
In the old quarter of town, typical small shops offer local craftworks and products of the area including the sweet wine, olive oil, honey and tropical fruits. At the beach and fish restaurants you can enjoy the “pescaito frito” (fried fish), whilst the many international restaurants in town offer a wide variety of menus to suit all tastes.
Nerja retains its traditional festivals: The Fair, Holy Week (Easter), the San Isidro pilgrimage and the festivals of San Juan and Dia del Carmen are also celebrated in their own special way. There are a wide range of cultural events throughout the year. Of particular note is the acclaimed “Nerja Caves Festival”, which takes place amongst stalactites and stalagmites which were formed over millions of years. The Nerja Caves are currently the 3rd most visited monument in the whole of Spain.

Nueve kilómetros de playas dotadas con los mejores servicios de la internacionalmente Playa de Burriana, galardonada todos los años con la Bandera azul de la UE, hasta las pequeñas calas vírgenes del paraje natural de los acantilados de Maro. Los amantes de la naturaleza, pueden disfrutar de sus maravillosos paisajes. Para los que buscan actividades alternativas en sus vacaciones: pesca, submarinismo, esquí acuático, piragüismo, motos acuáticas, senderismo, cicloturismo, paseo a caballo, "safaris" en todo terreno, parapente... con servicios autorizados y de plena garantía.
El centro histórico construido desde 1487, parte del Balcón de Europa, antiguo castillo del siglo IX, actualmente mirador sobre el mar. En el boquete de Calahonda comienza el Paseo de los Carabineros, un bello camino enclavado en un paisaje natural de rocas bordeando la costa hasta la playa Burriana. A un lado del Balcón de Europa, la Iglesia de El Salvador, del siglo XVII de estilo barroco-mudéjar. También se puede visitar la Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, del siglo XVI, con frescos del maestro Alonso Cano. En el casco antiguo las pequeñas tiendas tradicionales ofrecen toda la artesanía y productos típicos de la zona, desde el vino dulce al aceite de oliva, la miel o los frutos secos tropicales. En sus merenderos y marisquerías podrá degustar el "pescaito frito", mientras la amplia variedad de restaurantes internacionales pone a su disposición un universo gastronómico.
Nerja mantiene vivas sus tradiciones: La Semana Santa, lo Romería de San Isidro, San Juan o el día del Carmen, se celebran de forma especial. De su amplia oferta actual destacamos el Festival de la Cueva de Nerja, declarada Bien de Interés Cultural, entre estalactitas y estalagmitas que se han ido formando a lo largo de milenios. Es el tercer monumento más visitado de España.
